welcome to our epic east coast
The East Coast of Australia isn’t just a destination, it’s a backpacker baptism. This sun-drenched strip of paradise is where sand, surf, and a hint of chaos collide to create stories you’ll probably embellish at every BBQ for the rest of your life. From Queensland’s tropical jungles to New South Wales’ legendary surf breaks, it’s a rite of passage for anyone chasing adventure.
In this issue, we’re rolling out the East Coast’s greatest hits. Think adrenaline-packed thrills, secret spots you’ll want to brag about, and food so good it’ll have you questioning your life choices. Whether you’re riding the waves, hitting the tracks, or just hunting down the perfect road trip snack, this coast isn’t just a journey, it’s a crash course in living your best life.
So, dust off your thongs (the footwear, obviously), top up the tank, and get ready for a wild ride where the only rule is to embrace the unexpected.

Before we hit the beaches and bars, let’s pause to appreciate Queensland’s wilder side
Because nothing says ‘adventure’ like a face-to-face encounter with the locals (and we’re not just talking about the backpackers).
WILDLIFE WARRIORS
Unmasking the Heroes of Queensland

Queensland’s wild heart isn’t just beating. It’s bounding, slithering, soaring, and occasionally stealing someone’s sandwich. But while the spotlight often goes to the koalas and cassowaries, it’s the humans behind the scenes who are the real unsung heroes.

ENTER WILDLIFE RESCUE QUEENSLAND (WRQ)
A team of legends working day and night to rescue, rehabilitate, and release some of Australia’s most iconic (and occasionally spicy) wildlife. From orphaned joeys to wedge-tailed eagles tangled in fencing, WRQ is on the ground, in the trees, and out there making a difference.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN!
Every issue of Roam Aus helps fund the work WRQ does across the state. With each story you read, adventure you chase, and copy you flick through at the beach, you’re helping us support their mission. That’s right, your travel itch is literally helping save wildlife. Pretty epic, right?
Wildlife rescue is a rollercoaster of triumph and heartbreak. Nothing beats watching an animal that was once sick, injured, or orphaned return to the wild, strong and free, right where they belong. But for every success there are losses that stay with you. We give everything to these animals, and while not every story ends happily, the ones that do make it all worth it."
- Byron Cann, President, WRQ

WHY WRQ MATTERS:
-
They’ve rescued and rehabilitated thousands of animals across Queensland.
-
They’re entirely volunteer-driven, relying on donations to keep doing what they do best.
-
They’re champions of public awareness, Indigenous partnerships, and education, because the best way to protect wildlife is to get everyone involved.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
-
Spread the word (yes, your Instagram counts).
-
Donate, if you can.
-
Volunteer or support local wildlife carers.
-
Keep adventuring with purpose. Just by being here, you’re already making an impact.
YOUR IMPACT MATTERS
When you pick up Roam Aus, you’re not just flipping through pretty pictures and wild yarns, you’re joining a movement. One that backs the people and projects keeping Australia’s wild side alive and thriving.
So here’s to the wildlife warriors, the adventurers, and the ones who roam with purpose. Together, we’re not just telling better stories, we’re helping write a better future.

From saving wildlife to surviving hostel life
East Coast backpacking is an adventure of its own. Bunk up, embrace the chaos, and get ready for nights you’ll (mostly) remember.
HOSTEL LIFE
What to Expect Whilst Hostel Hopping the East Coast + The Best
Places to Stay on the East Coast
Hostel life on the East Coast isn’t about luxury, it’s about embracing the beautiful chaos of bunk beds, instant noodles, and stories that start with “you won’t believe what happened last night.” It’s a survival game with a social twist, where earplugs are currency, kitchens are battlefields, and friendships are born over a single power outlet.
Here’s the thing: sleep is optional. Expect snorers, awkward bunk climbs, and the occasional “who stole my pasta?” mystery. But it’s all part of the charm. Hostels are social experiments with killer sunsets. They’re messy, loud, and absolutely unforgettable.

What to expect:
-
Sleep? What Sleep?
Between midnight arrivals, sunrise hikes, and impromptu drinking games, rest is more of a suggestion. But hey, hammocks were invented for a reason.
-
Kitchens of Chaos:
Hostel kitchens are culinary survival zones. Label your food or risk a tragic avocado theft. Bonus points if you master the art of borrowing salt without sparking a feud.
-
Dorm Room Roulette:
Someone will snore like a freight train, someone will unpack their life, and someone will always forget their keycard. Laugh it off, it’s all part of the adventure.
-
Stories for Days:
From the German hitchhiker who’s been “finding himself” for six months to the Canadian guy serenading everyone with his guitar, you’ll leave with tales to rival any travel blog.
Top Hostels to Check Out

Pro Tips for Hostel Survival
-
Earplugs Are Life:
Block out snorers, midnight karaoke, and that one guy who talks in his sleep.
-
Go With the Flow:
Lost flip-flop? Sudden card game invite? Hostel life is all about rolling with it.
-
Say Hi:
Hostels are where travel crews form. Jump into the BBQ, join the card game, and let the good vibes roll.
Embrace the quirks, embrace the noise, and embrace the chaos
Hostel life is messy, unpredictable, and wildly fun. Exactly where your East Coast adventure begins.

Every great road trip needs a killer playlist. Whether you’re cruising past sugarcane fields or hitting the brakes for a wayward kangaroo, music is the vibe-maker. Enter Roam Radio: our handpicked Spotify playlists designed to match every mile of your East Coast journey.

After a few nights of questionable sleep and instant noodles, nothing resets the soul like saltwater therapy.
The East Coast’s hostels put you right on the doorstep of Australia’s best surf spots, and with pro bodyboarder Lachlan Cramsie’s guide, you’ll know exactly where to paddle out next.
QUICK TIPS
Top 10 Surf Spots on the East Coast

with Lachlan Cramsie
Surfing the East Coast isn’t just a pastime, it’s a rite of passage. From buttery beginner waves to barrels that’ll humble even the most seasoned riders, this coastline is an endless playground. To help you paddle out with purpose, we teamed up with pro bodyboarder Lachlan Cramsie to break down the best breaks and share his top tips for making the most of your time in the water.

#1
Snapper Rocks (Gold Coast)
The Superbank is pure magic. Expect world-class barrels and rides so long your legs might give out, but be ready to share the lineup with the masses.

#2
Noosa Main Beach (Sunshine Coast)
Beginner-friendly and effortlessly cool. Grab a longboard and cruise the glassy waves as the sun dips behind the horizon.

#3
The Pass (Byron Bay)
A dreamy right-hand point break with playful dolphins, warm water, and all the Byron charm you can handle, usually a nice longboard wave but can be surfed on all crafts on the better days.

#4
Lennox Head (Northern NSW)
For the fearless. This iconic break rewards skill and bravery with epic, rolling waves. Be aware of the jump off with slippery, bouldery rocks.

#5
Crescent Head (Mid-North Coast)
Longboarding nirvana. Smooth, endless waves paired with postcard-perfect scenery.

#6
Angourie Point (Yamba)
A National Surfing Reserve with flawless, uncrowded breaks for those in the know, be aware though it can be very localised.

#7
Iluka Beach (Mid-North Coast)
A powerful right hand wedge pushing off a Rockwall with steep, fast takeoffs and power to roll you under water for a long time. Be careful of both the locals in the carpark and the locals that live under water as well…

#8
Merewether Beach (Newcastle)
Multiple peaks for surfers of all levels. Bonus: it’s home to the Newcastle Surfest competition.

#9
Seal Rocks (Mid-North Coast)
A hidden gem for surfers willing to venture off the beaten track. It’s as peaceful as it is powerful.

#10
Rainbow Bay (Gold Coast)
End your day with a sunset session on glassy waves. Perfection in every sense.

Cramsie’s Quick Tips
Timing is Everything: “Dawn patrol is a game-changer. Fewer crowds, cleaner waves, and watching the sunrise from the lineup? Next level.”
-
Respect the Lineup:
“The vibe in the water is everything. Don’t drop in on someone’s wave, and always share the stoke.”
-
Gear Check:
“Wax, sunscreen, backup leash. Forget one, and you’ll be the surfer nobody envies.”
-
Know the Forecast:
“Apps like Magicseaweed and Coastalwatch are your secret weapons for scoring the best swell.”
A note from Cramsie -
“Surfing the East Coast isn’t just about the waves. It’s about the people, the sunrises, and the wipeouts you’ll laugh about later. Whether you’re chasing your first ride or hunting down the perfect barrel, just remember: it’s all about having fun and soaking it in. That’s what surfing’s really about.”

BARKIN BOARDS
Barkin Boards was born from one simple truth: surfboards shouldn’t cost a fortune. We cut out the middlemen, source from the same factories as the big brands, and pass the savings straight to you. Same quality, better prices, because surfing should be fun, not financially painful. Woof.
10% OFF MINI MALS

You’ve carved up the coast from the waterline. now it’s time to launch.
Swap surfboards for drone blades and see the East Coast from above, where the real magic unfolds in every winding headland and turquoise reef.
The East Coast, from Berg’s Eye View
WHY SEEING IT FROM ABOVE JUST HITS DIFFERENT
So, you’ve hiked it, road-tripped it, maybe even jumped out of a plane over it, but have you flown the East Coast? And we’re not talking airline peanuts and aisle seats. We mean throwing a drone in the air and capturing the coast from the kind of angle that makes you go, damn.
For drone hobbyist Stace, what started as a side-hustle hobby quickly turned into a full-blown love affair with coastal Australia.
“This perspective eludes you from the ground, you really feel like you are seeing the world in a way many will never” she reckons. And she’s not wrong. Wildlife comes alive, sandbars swirl like artwork, reef edges glow, and forests turn into textured patchworks that look like something out of a gallery.

Stace’s Top Spots to Fly
When she’s road-tripping the east coast, these are her go-tos for that swoon-worthy shot:
Newcastle NSW – Think dreamy salty ocean baths, waves and humpback whales. This place left a fond impression on me with its coastal charm and roaring landscape, but I’d be lying if I said flying around and seeing it from above wasn’t the homemade icing on my store-bought cake. If you’re there during whale migration season; fly baby, fly (with respect)!
Port Alma / Gladstone – Capricorn Coast QLD – From the ground, these places are industrial and probably not somewhere you’d think to stop knowing otherwise. That’s the thing about drones. They make you look and think further, widening your perspective. Their expansive tidal waterways are my favourite kind of playground. Team that with the right tide, soft lighting and some contrasting colours - happy days. These sessions and photos blew my little mind.
Double Island Point, Sunshine Coast QLD – A tidal access drive across Rainbow Beach already makes this place special, but then... that surf, those waves, marine life passing through and by. This place is pure magic where my drone and I were just fortunate enough to be a part of it.
North Stradbroke Island QLD – Drone or no drone, get yourself over here. Whether you are by yourself like I was, travelling with someone or bringing the family, I think you’d find it hard not to fall in love with this island. From the air, the sun shines over the island and the ample marine life frolic below. If it wasn’t for battery life, I could spend hours up there watching it all unfold from under me.
Stace’s Tips for Flying Like a Legend
Thinking of bringing a drone on your next trip? Do it. But don’t be a muppet. Here’s Stace’s quick hit list:
1. Know the rules – Especially around national parks and people. Download the CASA OpenSky app to check where you can fly.
2. Golden hour wins – That early morning or pre-sunset glow will make your footage pop. Invest in some filters (eBay ftw).
Practice first – Trust us, you don’t want your first flight to end in a tree.
3. Fly chill – Stay away from crowds and wildlife, don’t buzz people or animals, and don’t fly like a maniac.

FINAL WORD
Bringing a drone on your East Coast adventure doesn’t mean you’re trying to be an influencer. It just means you’re seeing the coast the way sea eagles do, soaring, epic, and with unmatched perspective.

NATURES OWN RAVE
SPRINGBROOKS GLOW WORM CAVES
In the misty depths of Springbrook National Park lies a secret spectacle that’s cooler than any nightclub: bioluminescent Glow Worm Caves. Beneath the dense rainforest canopy, these magical caves transform the dark into a starry wonderland, making you feel like you’ve stumbled into nature’s own rave.
The Glow Worm Magic
Step inside, and you’re instantly surrounded by thousands of tiny, shimmering lights. These glow worms (technically larvae, but let’s keep the magic alive) spin a scene so surreal, it feels like a galaxy just blinked into existence underground.
“Honestly, it’s a hidden gem that most people bypass while chasing waterfalls in the area, it’s otherworldly,” says Ben, co-creator of Roam Aus Magazine.
But the magic starts before you even reach the cave. The journey winds through ancient rainforest, with cascading waterfalls, towering trees, and lush greenery so vibrant, you’ll run out of camera space before you even get there.
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT:
Waterfalls First, Glow Later:
Arrive in the afternoon, hit the tracks, chase waterfalls, and soak up the rainforest before the real magic begins.
Stay for the Glow-Up:
After sundown, head to the caves, where thousands of glow worms light up the dark like an underground galaxy.
Pack Smart:
Sturdy shoes, a jacket, and a flashlight for the trails, just keep it off in the caves. No phone flashes, let the glow do its thing.
Easy Escape:
Just an hour from the Gold Coast, Springbrook National Park is a detour worth taking.
why it's worth the detour
Sure, Queensland’s beaches are stunning, but Springbrook offers something entirely unique: a quiet, almost mystical experience that feels worlds away from the usual backpacker chaos.
From waterfalls to underground galaxies, Springbrook proves the best sights aren’t always in plain view. Take the detour and thank us later.

After all that glow-in-the-dark rainforest magic, it’s time to hit the city.
Brisbane might not scream bucket list, but if you know where to look, it’s full of free gems, riverside vibes, and a perfect place to pause before the next big leg north.
BRISBANE ON A BUDGET:
BIG CITY VIBES, NO BIG SPEND

Brisbane might not top every backpacker’s bucket list, but if you’re cruising the East Coast and decide to swing by, don’t skip it. This river city’s got its fair share of laid-back charm, green spaces, and free stuff that won’t cost you a cent.
Here’s how to soak up Brisbane without draining your wallet:

2. HIT THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
Home to life-size dinos, ancient megafauna, and other weird Aussie creatures, this one’s a win for nerds and non-nerds alike. Entry’s free, and the air-con’s a bonus.
1. WANDER SOUTH BANK
Palm trees, street performers, and a man-made beach smack in the middle of the city. Stroll the Arbour, check out the free galleries, and take a dip at Streets Beach. Yes, it’s chlorinated. No, that doesn’t stop anyone.

3. GOMA (GALLERY OF MODERN ART)
You don’t have to know what it means to enjoy it. GOMA’s bold, bizarre, and bursting with colour, plus it’s one of the best modern art galleries in the country, and totally free to enter.
4. FAIRY TRAIL HOPPING
No, really. There are hand-painted fairy doors hidden all over Brisbane, from tree trunks in the botanic gardens to sneaky alley walls. It’s weird, it’s fun, and surprisingly addictive once you spot your first one.

6. MT COOT-THA LOOKOUT
For panoramic city views that feel far from city chaos, grab a bus or hike up to Mount Coot-tha. The lookout’s free, the air is fresh, and sunset is top-tier.
5. CRUISE THE RIVER (TECHNICALLY NOT FREE... BUT CLOSE ENOUGH)
The Brisbane ferry, yep, that iconic CityCat... Lets you glide past the skyline, leafy banks, and some of the best riverside views for just 50 cents a trip. It’s scenic, breezy, and technically not free, but c’mon... It’s cheaper than a servo iced coffee.
7. FINISH AT THE WHARVES (TECHNICALLY NOT FREE... BUT YOU'VE EARNED IT!)
Once your budget adventure’s wrapped, reward yourself with an ice-cold beer at Howard Smith Wharves. River views, fairy lights, and that smug feeling of having done Brisbane like a pro.
Brisbane’s not trying to be Sydney, and that’s exactly why it works. It’s chill, it’s green, and if you do it right, it won’t cost you a dime (give or take one frothy at sunset).

City vibes sorted? Time to swap skyline views for mountain silhouettes.
Just a short drive north, the Glass House Mountains are calling, and they’re serving ancient peaks, epic hikes, and nature that slaps. Let’s stretch those legs in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

From Sea Level to Sky High:
The Mountains You Can Climb Between Surf Sessions
Tired of chasing waves? How about chasing altitude. Just inland from the Sunshine Coast’s beaches lies the Glass House Mountains. A jagged lineup of ancient volcanic peaks that look like something out of a fantasy film… or a surf trip fever dream. And the best bit? You can smash out a summit and still be back down in time for a beach beer.
This isn’t some multi-day hiking slog. It’s quick hits of elevation with epic payoffs. Short, sharp climbs that get your blood pumping and your camera roll loaded.
Mount Ngungun: The Easy Crowd-Pleaser
Quick, accessible, and ridiculously photogenic. The trail winds through open bush before popping out onto sun-drenched rock platforms with views over the entire Glass House range. You’ll spot Tibrogargan towering nearby, menacing, majestic, and just begging for a zoom shot.
1.5 hrs return | Moderate climb | Insta gold
Mount Beerburrum: For the Calf Burn
It’s short but spicy. A steep paved path leads to a fire tower lookout, and yeah, it’s a grind. But at the top? 360-degree views that’ll stop the sweat. On a clear day, you’ll spot the coastline you just came from and the peaks you’re about to conquer.
45 mins return | Steep but sealed | Great pit stop hike
Tibrogargan Lookout Track: For the Vibe, Not the Vertical
Want the views without the vertigo? Skip the summit trail (unless you’re a rock climber with a death wish) and hit the lookout walk. It’s a cruisy track through scrub and forest that opens up to views of the range, no scrambling required.
45 mins return | Easy trail | Full vibe, zero drama

why it's worth the detour
It’s the ultimate balance, surf in the morning, summit by lunch. These climbs aren’t about bragging rights (okay, maybe a little), but they’re about seeing the Sunshine Coast from a different angle. One that makes you stop, stare, and maybe, for a second, forget your legs are burning.
pro tip:
Hit the trails at sunrise or sunset for peak lighting and fewer crowds. Pack water, wear real shoes (thongs won’t cut it), and don’t forget to look up once in a while. Those views hit different from 250 metres up.

You’ve stretched your legs, now it’s time to kick up some sand.
Next stop: Rainbow Beach, where the tracks are wild, the views are next-level, and the only thing better than the coastline is getting to carve it in a 4WD.

4WD ADVENTURE
Exploring Rainbow Beach and Double Island
If you're new to 4WDing on the beach or just looking for a perfect weekend getaway, Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point should be at the top of your list. This stretch of Queensland is a 4WD playground: wide sandy tracks, breathtaking headland views, and trails that'll challenge you just enough without breaking your spirit. Whether you're here to simply drive on the sand, chase the perfect sunset, or spot whales from the limestone cliffs, this place has it all.
To help you tackle it like a legend, we caught up with Jarrad from Roam Gear, a local who grew up in these parts and knows every track, tide change, and potential bogging spot. His golden rule? "Respect the sand, time the tides, and send it - but not too hard."

The Must-Drive Tracks (According to Jarrad)
RAINBOW BEACH TO DOUBLE ISLAND POINT
"This is THE drive you have been waiting for. When I say THE drive, I mean those open stretches of hard-packed sand, waves rolling in, and that epic moment when Double Island Point finally comes into view, it's unlike anything else. A word of warning though: try and drive on low tide and don't get too ballsy with the washouts and creek crossings!"
LEISHA TRACK
"This track connects Teewah Beach to Double Island Point. If the wind's not on the Teewah side, this is your shortcut to paradise. It's a short, soft ride and home to one of Australia's longest right-hand surf breaks.
If it hasn’t rained much before you go there there’s no doubt you're going to see someone bogged, just make sure that's not you! But when you cross over to Double Island? Sheesh!.. That's when your day goes from great to unforgettable in less than five minutes."
FRESHWATER TRACK
"If the beach is looking sketchy or the tide's got you cornered, this is your go to when you need to get back on the Blacktop. It's a mix of lush rainforest and firm sand, just keep an eye out for deep ruts if there's been heavy rain."
MUDLO ROCKS
"Nah, she'll be right mate, just send it!" I reckon, if this spot could talk it would tell you it's heard that phrase 1,903,583 times. The Mudlos are notorious for testing some of the best. This spot is a lot of fun though, so many good moments come from the wallys that have a good solid crack at what's on offer.
Make sure to plan your trip around low tide for a better chance of success. Check the tide, size up the rocks, and if it looks sketchy, take the Freshwater Track instead. Lead with caution, take care but most importantly... Have fun!

Jarrad's 4WD Beach Driving Tips
Tire Pressure = Success
"Lower your tire pressure to 18-20 PSI for better traction. Any higher, and you'll be making memories for the wrong reasons."
Know the Tides, Avoid the Drama
"Low tide is your golden window when driving on the beach. Aim for two hours before or after low tide unless you're into wet seats and expensive tow truck bills, it's best to avoid driving during high tide."
Pack for the Unexpected
"While Double Island missions are a bit easier than Fraser Island, it's always smarter to be prepared. Make sure you've got essentials like Maxtrax, a snatch strap, a shovel, and maybe even a mate with a second vehicle. If you're heading out solo, tread carefully - the beach doesn't care if you've got mobile phone signal or not, and it's easy to find yourself stuck when you least expect it."
Respect the Tracks
"Stick to the marked routes. Smashing through dunes not only wrecks our beautiful backyard but can also lead to areas being closed off for everyone. Play it smart, and let's keep these spots open for future adventures."
Take It Easy
"Beach driving isn't a race, so stick to the new speed limits and take your time. Soak in the views, stop at the headlands, and really appreciate what makes this place so magical."
Roam Gear's Camping Essentials
After decades of hitting the tracks, camping under the stars, and helping thousands of customers get adventure ready, Jarrad figured out exactly what most weekend warriors and off-grid legends really need: a solid 12 volt setup that’s simple, reliable, and ready for anything. Whether it’s keeping your fridge cold, your lights on, or your phone charged, it all comes down to having the right solar and battery setup and that’s where Roam Gear on the Gold Coast comes in.
At Roam Gear, they take the stress and confusion out of setting up your 12 volt system. No more endless YouTube rabbit holes or dodgy advice from your mate’s cousin. These guys live and breathe 12 Volt. From solar panels and lithium batteries to inverters, DC-DC chargers, and complete custom systems they’ve got everything you need to stay powered up, wherever you pull up.
But Roam Gear is way more than just solar and batteries. They’re your go-to adventure Headquarters, stocking a massive range of premium fridges, awnings, rooftop tents, camping gear, and all the must haves for touring or beach camping missions like Double Island Point. They only stock gear they trust, and it’s all been tried, tested, and thrashed in real world Aussie conditions.

No matter where you’re headed beach, bush, or beyond Roam Gear has your back. Check out their epic showroom in Ormeau, or give the team a call on 1300 ROAM GEAR (1300 762 643).

Why Rainbow Beach & Double Island Point Are Special
It's not just the drive, it's the vibe. From the towering coloured sand cliffs to the endless stretch of turquoise waters, this place oozes adventure and natural beauty. And then there's that moment when you hit the first smooth stretch of sand. The feeling of freedom is unlike anywhere else. At Double Island Point, if you time it just right, you might catch the whales putting on an epic show, the surf rolling in perfectly, and, best of all, you could have the whole place to yourself, like your own slice of paradise.
"Every track tells a story," Jarrad says. "Some are lessons, some are just bloody good fun." Whether you're navigating the tracks, catching a glimpse of the wildlife, or just soaking in the epic views, every corner of this place has something unique to offer.

A Final Word from Jarrad
"Preparation is key. Know your rig, understand the conditions, and whatever you do, don't be that guy who floors it into a saltwater grave. Rainbow Beach and Double Island aren't just drives they're experiences you'll be talking about long after the sand washes off."
Now go and enjoy this beautiful part of the world that we are lucky to call ours.

MEET THE 2025 4X4 ADVENTURE TEAMS

Still got sand in your socks? Good.
If tearing up the sand at Rainbow Beach left you wanting more, K’gari is where you take it next-level. Hire your own 4WD or join a group. Either way, this isn’t just beach driving, it’s bucket-list material.
WELCOME TO K'GARI
Australia’s Ultimate Nature and Culture Escape

Where else can you cruise a beach highway, float in impossibly clear freshwater lakes, and wander rainforests that defy gravity by growing on sand? K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), isn’t just an island. It’s a living, breathing masterpiece. With freshwater lakes shimmering like liquid glass, ancient rainforests, and dunes that roll straight into the ocean, this is where nature’s greatest hits collide.
Feel the thunder of waves on 75 Mile Beach, lose yourself on hidden rainforest paths, or catch your reflection in the turquoise waters of Lake McKenzie. K’gari’s raw beauty doesn’t just invite you in, it grabs hold and refuses to let go.

WHERE IS IT AND HOW TO GET THERE?
K’gari lounges just off Queensland’s southern coast, about 250km north of Brisbane. Getting there is half the adventure. Take a ferry from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, both gateways to this sand-covered wonderland.
Once you’re on the island, ditch the paved roads (they don’t exist here) and embrace the 4WD life. Sand tracks rule the day, so come ready to tackle them yourself or join a guided tour if you’d rather let a pro take the wheel.

WHY K'GARI IS A MUST-DO
Lake McKenzie: A slice of heaven with pure white silica sand and water so clear you’ll wonder if it’s enchanted.
75 Mile Beach: A beach you can drive on, just watch the tides and keep your eyes peeled for dingoes.
Champagne Pools: Natural rock pools that bubble and fizz like, you guessed it, champagne.
The Maheno Shipwreck: Rusted and dramatic, this stranded beauty feels like it’s holding secrets from another era.
Rainforest Walks: Rainforests growing on sand dunes. Yes, you read that right, it’s Jurassic-level cool.

THE DINGOES OF K'GARI
K’gari is home to one of the purest populations of dingoes in Australia, and these wild canines bring a dash of untamed spirit to every corner of the island. Majestic and mysterious, they’re a reminder that this is their home, and we’re just visitors.
Do’s and Don’ts for Dingo Encounters:
Do: Admire them from a distance and snap that photo (zoom is your friend).
Don’t: Feed them, ever. It messes with their natural behavior and puts them at risk.
Do: Store food in dingo-proof containers (trust us, they’re clever).
Don’t: Approach or provoke them, they’re wild animals, not Insta props.
Respect the dingoes, and you’ll leave with memories instead of regrets.

a cultural connection
Known as K’gari, or “paradise,” by the Butchulla people, the island carries a history as rich as its landscapes. The Butchulla’s deep connection to the land is woven through Dreamtime stories, sacred sites, and sustainable practices.
A guided cultural tour is the key to unlocking K’gari’s heritage and understanding why this place is so much more than a travel destination.

HOW TO EXPLORE K'GARI
4WD Tracks:
No paved roads, no problem. Driving on sand is as much part of the adventure as the destination itself.
Guided Tours:
Let locals handle the tricky tracks while you soak in the stories, sights, and surprises along the way.
Camping:
Go full wilderness mode and sleep under the stars—but make sure your campsite is dingo-proof.

NO 4WD?
NO PROBLEM!
Not kitted out for off-road adventures? No worries. Book a guided tour and let the experts do the hard work while you kick back and enjoy the ride. Don’t forget to take advantage of your exclusive Roam Aus reader discount on tours, check them out at Experience Oz.

PRO TIP
Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure. And remember: K’gari’s tides wait for no one. Plan your beach drives with care unless you fancy a closer relationship with the ocean than planned.
K’gari isn’t just another stop on the East Coast, it’s a world of its own. From its otherworldly ecosystems and pristine beaches to its rich cultural history and untamed dingoes, this is the kind of place that stays with you long after the sand washes out of your gear.

Some spots are worth the detour, Rainbow Falls is one of them. Tucked inside Blackdown Tableland National Park, this hidden oasis serves up a crystal-clear rock pool, a cool cascading waterfall, and, if you time it right, rainbows dancing in the mist.
The short but steep hike in makes that first plunge even sweeter. No crowds, no salt, just crisp, fresh water and untouched beauty.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Located two hours west of Rockhampton, Rainbow Falls sits deep in Blackdown Tableland National Park. A 4WD is recommended for the final stretch, but trust us, it’s worth it.
why it's worth the detour
An epic plunge pool to reset after long drives.
A short but scenic hike through rugged bushland.
Feels like a secret spot, because most people speed right past it.
"Sometimes the best road trip memories aren’t made on the highway, they’re found in places like this."

carmila beach & platypus bush camp
Not all great stays come with a rooftop bar and room service. Some are wild, some are off-grid, and some come with a front-row seat to Queensland’s best nature show. Whether you’re chasing rugged rainforest vibes or a beachside escape, these two stays are proof that the best way to experience the East Coast is to wake up right in the middle of it.

#1
Carmila Beach: Camp with a View (and most likely No One Around)
Forget caravan parks packed tighter than a festival mosh pit, Carmila Beach is the kind of spot you stumble upon and wonder why everyone isn’t talking about it. Nestled just south of Mackay, this beachside camp dishes up million-dollar views without the million-dollar price tag, crowds, or noise (unless you count the waves).
It’s pure road trip magic: roll up, pitch your tent or park the van, and wake up with the sand at your doorstep and the sunrise doing its thing over the ocean. There’s no reception, no showers, and no stress. Just salty air, starry skies, and the kind of peaceful reset that makes your instant coffee taste gourmet.

why stay here?
-
Beachfront camping for just $14/night
-
Pet-friendly, so bring the doggo.
-
Campfires allowed (when permitted), and nothing beats a sunset fire with the tide rolling in.

pro tip
The earlier you arrive, the better your spot. And don’t forget the mozzie spray, you’re still in Queensland, mate.

Next up: a stay that swaps waves for waterfalls and koalas for platypuses.

#2
Platypus Bush Camp
Tucked into the rainforest of Eungella National Park, this is where you trade city lights for fireflies and the sound of car horns for the calls of unseen creatures in the trees. Eungella is home to some of the richest biodiversity in the country, not to mention one of the best places in the world to spot a platypus in the wild.

why stay here?
This spot is the real deal: rugged, raw, and ridiculously beautiful. Think rainforest hiking by day, campfire sessions by night, and the kind of tranquility that makes your phone feel like dead weight. Plus, nothing beats watching a platypus pop up for air just a few meters away, like a rare wildlife documentary, but in real life.

the essentials
• Accommodation: unpowered campsites along the creek, plus rustic tree huts for those who like their wilderness with a side of comfort and ease.
• Facilities: Hot rainforest showers, flushing toilets, fire pits, and, a camp kitchen where you can see a beautiful big swimming hole.
• How to Get There: A scenic two-hour drive from Airlie beach, or 1 hour from Mackay with winding roads that make for an epic playlist-worthy journey.
• Must-Do: Platypus spotting onsite or at Broken River, hiking the Sky Window Circuit for unreal Pioneer Valley views, exploring Finch Hatton Gorge that includes Araluen Cascades and the wheel of fire.

Shake off the dust, crank up the tunes, and get ready for a bucket-list banger.
Next stop: Airlie Beach, where the road meets the reef and the vibes are high!
AIRLIE BEACH
How to Spend a Weekend Like a Local
Airlie Beach is the definition of laid-back coastal charm. It’s the kind of place where shoes are optional, the sun always seems to be shining, and life moves to the rhythm of the tides. Nestled between lush tropical hills and the sparkling Coral Sea, this small town punches above its weight with a buzzing main strip, epic nightlife, and the Whitsundays just a stone’s throw away.
For Roam Aus creator Jayden, Airlie isn’t just a destination, it’s home turf. Having spent years living and working in the region, Jayden’s advice is simple: embrace the vibe, give it a good nudge, and let Airlie work its magic. Here’s how to spend a weekend here like you’re one of the locals.

DAY 1
Settle In, Then Give It a Nudge
Drop your bags, put on something breezy, and wander the main strip. Airlie Beach doesn’t do formalities, it’s barefoot vibes, beachside beers, and live music all the way. Shoes are optional, and a sunburn paired with a hangover is basically proof you’ve had a great time.
Start with a drink at The Deck for waterfront views or grab a spot at KC’s Bar & Grill for a meal with some tunes.
“You’ve gotta feel the place out first,” Jayden advises. “But don’t go too hard! Tomorrow’s early, and you’ll need more than vibes to get through it.”
Translation? Soak it up, but save a bit of energy. Airlie’s not going anywhere.
DAY 2
ISLANDS, SALT, & SHENANIGANS
Time to see what the Whitsundays are all about. This is prime adventure territory, and no trip to Airlie is complete without hitting the water.
Top Picks for Day Tours:
Ocean Rafting – Fast boats, unreal views, and an unforgettable day on the water.
Red Cat Adventures – Big adventure, stunning spots, and guaranteed good vibes.
Whichever tour you choose, expect turquoise waters, epic beaches, and an adventure that’ll have you questioning why you ever booked a return ticket.
After a day of salt and sunshine, head back to town to wash off the ocean and prep for the night ahead. “Airlie knows how to party,” Jayden laughs. “Give it a nudge. Hit the live music scene, have a dance, and enjoy the backpacker-meets-local chaos.”
Check out Magnums for that classic Airlie energy or swing by Boaty’s for something more laid-back but equally fun.

DAY 3
recovery and reflection
Start the day the Airlie way: with a dip at Cedar Creek Falls.
“There’s no better way to wash off the sins of the night before,” says Jayden. Nestled in the rainforest, the falls are refreshingly cool and just the reset you’ll need.
Once you’re feeling human again, take a short drive to Cape Gloucester Resort for a long, lazy lunch by the beach. Good food, great views, and just enough relaxation to make you forget the kilometers ahead.
End your weekend at Coral Beach, where sunset puts on a show worthy of a standing ovation. “It’s a quiet spot,” Jayden says. “Perfect for wrapping it all up. Just you, the coral-strewn sands, and one of the best sunset spots this side of the Tropic of Capricorn.”
why airlie beach is special
Airlie Beach isn’t just a place, it’s a state of mind. It’s where adventures happen, memories are made, and a little mischief is always on the itinerary.
“There’s something about this place,” Jayden reflects. “You don’t just visit Airlie, you feel it. The people, the sunsets, the salt left in your hair for weeks, it stays with you. You’ll leave, but trust me, you’ll always want to come back.”

As you leave the coastal buzz of Airlie Beach behind, the road takes you further north into true tropical territory.
Next stop: Magnetic Island, a slice of paradise where island time isn’t just a saying, it’s a lifestyle.

MAGNETIC ISLAND
The Backpacker’s Paradise
Just a short ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island (or “Maggie” to the locals) is a tropical escape with an edge. Equal parts relaxation and adventure, this island paradise offers everything from quiet beaches to rugged hiking trails and a quirky koala population that might just steal your heart. Whether you’re chasing sunsets, snorkelling among coral reefs, or sipping a drink with your toes in the sand, Maggie is where you’ll want to hit pause and let the tropical vibes take over.

Why Magnetic Island is a Must-Visit
Magnetic Island is a year-round destination where adventure meets tranquillity. Half of the island is protected as a national park, meaning you’re never far from pristine beaches, bushland, and epic viewpoints. Add in a laid-back local culture and some of the best hostels in Queensland, and you’ve got a backpacker’s dream.
Things to Do on Magnetic Island
HIKE THE FORTS WALK
This iconic trail offers stunning panoramic views and the chance to spot koalas in the wild. A mix of history and nature, it’s a must-do for first timers.
SNORKEL AT ALMA OR GEOFFREY BAY
With fringing coral reefs just off the shore, these spots are perfect for underwater explorers. Keep an eye out for colourful fish and even a shipwreck.
MEET THE LOCALS AT BUNGALOW BAY KOALA VILLAGE
Get up close with koalas, wallabies, and more at this wildlife sanctuary.
CHASE SUNSETS AT HORSESHOE BAY
With its calm waters and beachside cafes, this is the ultimate spot to unwind after a day of exploring.
HIRE A "MOKE" AND CRUISE THE ISLAND
These funky open-top cars are a Magnetic Island classic, perfect for hopping between beaches in style.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
How to Get There: Take the ferry from Townsville, it’s only a 20-minute ride. The ferry runs regularly, so getting to and from the island is a breeze.
Getting Around: The island has a public bus service, but hiring a car (or a Moke) is the easiest way to explore.
Accommodation: Magnetic Island has plenty of backpacker-friendly options, like Base Magnetic Island, where beachfront vibes meet good times.

Quick Itinerary for a Weekend on Maggie
DAY 1
Arrive mid-morning, hire a Moke, and explore the island. Take the Forts Walk in the late afternoon for golden hour views, then head to Horseshoe Bay for dinner and sunset drinks.
DAY 2
Spend the morning snorkelling at Alma Bay or Geoffrey Bay, followed by lunch at a beachside café. In the afternoon, visit Bungalow Bay Koala Village or simply relax on the sand. End the day with a BBQ at your accommodation or join the party at Base Magnetic Island.
DAY 3
Fit in one last beach visit before catching the ferry back to the mainland, already planning your next trip to Maggie.

WHY YOU'LL FALL FOR MAGGIE
Magnetic Island isn’t just an island, it’s an experience. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time, make friends at the beach, and leave with sandy feet and a full heart.
As the locals say, “Once you’ve been to Maggie, nowhere else quite compares.”

While you’re soaking up the Magnetic Island vibes, don’t stop at the usual spots.
This place has layers, and if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find adventures that hit different. From secret trails to out-of-the-way beaches, it’s all about making the most of your time in paradise.
DIVE INTO WONDER
The Museum of Underwater Art
Some galleries have velvet ropes and security guards, this one has coral gardens and sea turtles cruising past the exhibits. Welcome to the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA), where conservation meets creativity beneath the waves of the Great Barrier Reef.
This isn’t just a dive site, it’s an art-meets-science playground, designed by world-renowned underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor to tell the reef’s story in a way that sticks with you long after you’ve dried off. Every installation plays a role in reef restoration, from providing new homes for marine life to educating the world about climate change.
Where to Find MOUA’s Underwater Wonders
The Coral Greenhouse (John Brewer Reef): An eerie, awe-inspiring underwater lab, filled with sculptures of young “reef guardians” and designed to foster coral growth.
Ocean Siren (Townsville): This solar-powered sculpture changes color based on real-time ocean temperatures. Basically, a neon warning sign for climate change.
Ocean Sentinels (John Brewer Reef): A snorkel-friendly art trail featuring the faces of marine scientists, Indigenous custodians, and conservationists, immortalized in stone and sea life.

“MOUA is a living piece of art that communicates to the people how important research is, how important coral reefs are, and how all these aspects... art, science, humanity, all can come together to protect the reef.”
— Dr. Katharina Fabricius, Ocean Sentinel
More Than Just a Pretty Dive
MOUA isn’t just for show, it’s part of the solution. The Coral Greenhouse doubles as a conservation hub, supporting coral research, reef restoration, and Indigenous-led education programs. The sculptures don’t just sit there looking cool, they actively encourage new coral to grow, creating a thriving marine ecosystem right before your eyes.

HOW TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF
Ditch the museum pass and book a dive or snorkel tour with Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive, SeaLink North Queensland or Pro Dive Magnetic Island. The exhibits are best experienced up close, where the only crowds you’ll be dodging are schools of fish.
A LIVING, BREATHING MASTERPIECE
Art, science, and nature collide at MOUA, turning the reef into both a gallery and a battleground in the fight against climate change. Whether you’re free-diving among coral-covered sculptures or watching the Ocean Siren glow on the Townsville shoreline, one thing’s for sure. This is a story worth diving into.

WALLAMAN FALLS: An epic Pit Stop
If the drive north is starting to feel endless, Wallaman Falls is the perfect excuse to hit the brakes. Towering 268 meters, this is Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfall and a show-stopping reminder of why detours are always worth it. Nestled in Girringun National Park, this World Heritage-listed wonder offers breathtaking views from the lookout or the chance to stretch your legs with a hike to the base. Either way, it’s the kind of pit stop that transforms a long drive into an unforgettable adventure.

By this point, you’ve soaked in the chilled vibes of the East Coast—beaches, waterfalls, and all the nature you can handle.
Now it’s time to turn things up a notch. Cue Skypark Cairns, where the vibe shifts from laid-back to full-on adrenaline, and the only way is down.

Dropping Celebrities from the Sky
Ever wondered what it feels like to leap into the abyss with nothing but a bungee cord between you and the ground? Welcome to Skypark Cairns. Australia’s only bungee jump site and a bucket-list destination for adrenaline junkies, thrill-seekers, and the occasional celebrity looking to test their mettle. Tucked into Cairns’ lush rainforest, this is where gravity gets personal, and screams echo for miles.
What’s Skypark Cairns All About?
Perched high in the canopy and overlooking the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics, Skypark by AJ Hackett is more than just a bungee jump. It’s an adrenaline playground, featuring:
Bungee Jumping – 50 metres of pure, heart-pounding freefall.

The Giant Swing – Think bungee, but with your mates and way more screaming.
This isn’t just for daredevils, it’s for anyone keen to ditch their fear of heights for an unforgettable story.

BRUSH WITH FAME
Even celebrities can’t resist the pull of Skypark. Zac Efron dropped in during the filming of his adventure show, adding a bit of Hollywood flair to the rainforest thrill. With its towering platform and lush canopy views, it’s the kind of experience that turns anyone, famous or not, into a bungee-jumping convert. But it’s not just A-listers who shine here. Every jump at Skypark feels like a personal achievement worthy of a standing ovation, or at least a high-five at the base.
The Leap: What to Expect
Imagine standing on the edge of a platform, heart pounding, as the view of emerald rainforest and distant mountains fills your vision. Then comes the countdown:
THREE. TWO. ONE... JUMP!
The freefall? Terrifying, electrifying, completely insane. The rebound? Pure euphoria. Whether you're soaring solo or strapped in with a mate, it's an experience that rewires your definition of fear and fun.
Not quite ready to bungee? The Minjin Jungle Swing offers a high-speed thrill without the full commitment of a jump. Or pair up with friends for the Giant Swing, where you’ll rocket through the treetops at speeds of up to 120km/h.

CAIRNS:
the final chapter
After weeks of beaches, islands, and road trip pit stops, the East Coast journey crescendos in Cairns. This tropical city is the beating heart of North Queensland, a vibrant hub where reef meets rainforest, and adventure meets backpacker bliss. Whether you’re diving the Great Barrier Reef, exploring ancient rainforests, or dancing into the early hours, Cairns is where the East Coast adventure comes full circle.

CAIRNS: BACKPACKER CENTRAL
Cairns buzzes with energy, a magnet for travelers seeking sun, adventure, and a taste of tropical living. Days here are spent snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef or chasing waterfalls in the Atherton Tablelands, while nights bring the kind of backpacker nightlife that’s legendary up and down the coast.
Don’t Miss
Great Barrier Reef Tours: Whether snorkeling or diving, exploring this natural wonder is non-negotiable. Think technicolor coral, sea turtles, and reef sharks.
Atherton Tablelands: A day trip here includes cooling off at Millaa Millaa Falls, floating in volcanic crater lakes, and scenic drives through lush farmland.
Kuranda Scenic Railway: Climb aboard this historic train ride for a journey through rainforest-clad mountains, with a stop in the artsy village of Kuranda.
Party Like a Pro
Cairns is as famous for its nightlife as it is for its natural wonders. Backpacker staples like Gilligan’s and The Woolshed offer everything from live music to dance floors filled with sandy-footed travelers. “You come for the reef, but you stay for the party,” says a local bartender with a knowing grin.
Cape Tribulation: Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef
Just a few hours north of Cairns lies Cape Tribulation, where the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest in the world, meets the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a place so wild and untouched it feels like stepping into a postcard.
What to Do
Explore the Daintree Rainforest: Walk beneath towering canopies and along mangrove boardwalks. Keep an eye out for the elusive cassowary, a prehistoric-looking bird that roams the area.
Cape Tribulation Beach: A stretch of pristine sand that’s as serene as it is spectacular.
Jungle Surfing: Zip-line through the treetops for a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest.
Pro Tip
Pack snacks and fuel up before heading north. This remote paradise is short on supplies but long on jaw-dropping scenery.

CAPTURING THE NIGHT
Photography with Alex Mitchell
When the sun sets on Cairns the surrounding rainforest becomes alive. For photographer Alex Mitchell, night is when the magic begins. Specializing in nocturnal wildlife photography, Alex has spent years capturing the creatures that call the rainforest home. From huge pythons and vibrant tree frogs to fascinating invertebrates.

The Draw of the Dark
"NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEAST"
Alex explains. “It’s quieter, more intimate. The rainforest feels alive in a way that’s hard to describe, especially during the wet season, you have to experience it to understand.”
One of Alex’s standout images is the huge scrub python that was nearly 5 metres long “That shot took hours of searching through the daintrees lowland rainforest,” he says. “But when it finally happened, it was pure magic.”
Another icon critter found almost exclusively in the Daintree rainforest is the peppermint stick-insect. “Commonly found amongst the pandanus leaves, these vibrant insects get their name from their defensive spray that smells like peppermint”
Getting Started: Alex’s Top Tips
For those inspired to try their hand at night time wildlife photography, Alex offers these tips:
1. Be Prepared: “Use a reliable, fully charged flashlight. Getting stranded in a rainforest without light is not fun!”
2. Patience Pays Off: “Animals don’t work on a schedule. Be ready to wait.. it’s worth it.”
3. Invite Some Mates: “The more eyes on the ground, the more likely you’ll find some epic wildlife.”
4. Do Your Research: “Whether it's on the internet or a field guide, find out more about the wildlife in your area and have a few targets in mind.”
5. Prime lighting: “A good flash and diffuser on your camera will illuminate your subject with soft beautiful light.”
WHY NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS
For Alex, it’s about more than capturing beautiful images.
"PHOTOGRAPHY BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN PEOPLE AND NATURE"
And nighttime exploration shines a light on lesser-known creatures” he says. “Sharing images of the rainforest’s fascinating nocturnal inhabitants can inspire others to appreciate and protect them.”
FINAL THOUGHTS
Cairns isn’t just the end of the East Coast adventure, it’s the grand finale. From snorkeling the reef to capturing nocturnal wonders, it offers the perfect balance of thrill and tranquility. As Alex says,
"ONCE YOU SEE THE RAINFOREST AT NIGHT, YOU'LL NEVER LOOK AT IT THE SAME WAY AGAIN"

A place where you leap into the unknown (sometimes literally), swap sunscreen tips with strangers, and discover that the best adventures don’t come with an itinerary. From dodging dingoes on K’gari to dancing your heart out in Cairns, this coast leaves you sunburned, a little sandy, and totally stoked for what’s next.
