welcome to
sunday thrills:
no guts, no glory.
Let's talk about the moment of truth.
That heart-in-your-throat, breath-held silence right before you commit. The split-second when "what if" becomes "here we go." That’s the space we live in. It’s where the real stories are born not in the planning, but in the execution.
This issue is a salute to the ones who live for that edge. We’re dropping in with a cliff jumper whose world-record attempt went brutally sideways, and finding out why the comeback is always part of the story. We’re rolling with a pro skater who traded the big leagues for building a grassroots crew, a wakeboarder who clawed his way back to world #1, and a mountaineer who’s stood on top of the world fourteen times over.
But it's not all podiums and pro-circuits. It’s the raw freedom of solo van life, the primal thrill of staring down a Great White, and the pure stoke of finding a perfect, empty wave with a busload of new mates.
No guts, no glory.

Think Australia’s winter is just a mild inconvenience between beach days? Think again.
We’ve got real snow, real slopes, and a whole lot of adventure hiding behind that laid-back Aussie stereotype. So before we dive into icy 4x4 tracks and hidden thermal pools, let’s talk about the powder playgrounds no one’s telling you about - but absolutely should be.

guts & gravity
Sending a 42.5m cliff jump with Vali Graham
You haven’t lived until your heart’s trying to beat its way out of your chest as you stare down a massive drop. Welcome to the world of cliff jumping, where the views are epic, the adrenaline is fierce, and the consequences are very, very real. For Aussie adventure athlete Vali Graham, it’s a calculated risk that comes with the ultimate reward.
This isn't just about launching yourself off a ledge; it's a sport. Known as "Dødsing" or "death diving," this extreme sport originated in Norway and has a cult following of athletes who push the limits of what's possible. It's a breathtaking mix of skill and guts, where divers hold a dramatic pose for as long as they can before tucking into a safer entry position just before hitting the water.
We had a chat with Vali to get the lowdown on his journey into the world of high-stakes cliff jumping, that heart-stopping world record attempt, and what's next for the Newcastle local who is redefining what it means to send it.

From a 'Shark-Tower' Dare to a High-Flying Career
So, how does someone get into the business of jumping off seriously high things for fun? For Vali, it was a classic case of mateship and a dash of youthful bravado.
"It honestly all started out as a few of my friends calling me one afternoon and being like: 'Let’s go jump off this tower,'" he recalls. The spot was a local legend known as 'shark-tower' in a nearby lake. The thrill was instant and addictive. "We all just went and had so much fun," he says.
That initial rush has since evolved into a full-blown passion, taking him to some of Australia's most stunning and secret spots. His favourite? "My favourite place is actually a secret place in Newcastle called Sea Cave," he reveals. "It’s got platforms from 12m to 26m and is just stunning."

The 42.5-Metre Leap That Went Sideways
Earlier this year, Vali set his sights on the ultimate prize: a new world record for the highest "death dive." The location was the stunning Minnehaha Falls in the Blue Mountains, a sheer 42.5-metre drop. The previous record, held by Swiss athlete Lucien Charlon, stood at 41.7 metres.
But this wasn't just another jump. "Well, the result definitely did not go to plan," Vali admits with stark honesty. The attempt ended with a brutal landing that resulted in a fractured spine and sternum, a skull fracture, and a ruptured eardrum.
Vali points to a few factors that contributed to the rough outcome. "The water was about 3 degrees Celsius; when I depth checked, as soon as I put my hand in, it was burning cold," he explains. Adrenaline was also a major player. "I was hyperventilating before to deal with the adrenaline going through my body and to hype myself up."
Looking back, he acknowledges, "I definitely could have done more preparation." Despite the miscalculation, a solid safety plan was in place. "Luckily, we had all the safety required to prevent anything worse from happening."
In a testament to his sheer toughness, after the impact, Vali regained consciousness in the water and managed to swim to shore. From there, he walked a staggering 1.2 kilometres out to the car with his crew.

The Mind Game and the Road Back
So what’s going through his head before taking on such a massive leap? "Before big jumps, it’s nothing but visualisation and praying," Vali shares. "And once my feet leave the cliff, there’s no going back. There are no thoughts, nothing, just the bliss of falling."
Now, his focus is on a different kind of challenge: recovery. And he's tackling it with the same determination he brings to the cliff's edge. "My recovery is going amazing," he says. "I have started jumping heights of 10m. Not Dødsing yet, but enjoying playing around on smaller stuff."
This period of healing has also brought a new perspective. "I'm keen to come back to Dødsing with a more creative approach," he adds, hinting at an evolution in his style and a deeper appreciation for the art of the sport. Two days after major surgery, he was already walking, a fact that amazed his followers and medical team alike.

Vali Graham's journey is a raw and honest look at the world of extreme sports. It's a reminder that with incredible highs can come crushing lows, but for those with the spirit to push through, the comeback is always on the horizon.
Keep up with Vali's recovery and his next chapter on his Instagram, @philosophyofsend.

Vali’s world-record bid was proof that living on the edge comes with a cost.
What if the real prize isn’t a trophy, but the feeling of pure, weightless freedom? The kind you can only get from stepping out of a perfectly good plane.
Off the edge:
SAM SIMONS AND THE PURE FREEDOM OF FREEFALL

You don’t forget the first time someone tells you they’ve jumped out of a perfectly good airplane for fun.
For Sam Simons, those stories came early – sitting cross-legged at Christmas, listening to his uncle recount wild skydiving adventures from all over the world. Thousands of jumps, exotic drop zones, near misses, and pure adrenaline. Sam was hooked before he’d even seen the inside of a plane.
“I literally couldn’t wait,” he laughs. “I asked my parents for a tandem skydive as a birthday present as soon as I was old enough."

FROM DREAM TO DROP ZONE
When the money finally came together, Sam didn’t just settle for one tandem. He went all in, signing up for the Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course - where your very first jump is solo.
“You have two instructors holding onto you, but as soon as you pull your parachute, you’re completely on your own,” he explains. “You’re under canopy, flying yourself to the ground while someone talks you through it over the radio. By jump 15, you’ve got your A Licence - and that’s recognised internationally.”
Getting licensed will set you back around $3,200, but for Sam, it was the best investment of his life. And those early jumps? Not what most people expect.

FALLING?
NO. FLYING.
“The first thing that shocked me is you’re not falling - you’re flying. Your brain has no reference for falling at that height, so it feels like lying on a cushion of air. You can move up, down, sideways relative to your mates - your arms and legs are literally your wings.”
The second shock? The people. “Skydivers are some of the coolest humans you’ll ever meet. They’re all just crazy enough to jump out of planes, so of course they also party hard, love the outdoors, and squeeze the most out of life. I’ve made lifelong friends at the drop zone - people I camp, snowboard, wakeboard, cliff jump, and travel with.”

TAKING IT GLOBAL
Sam’s first jumps after getting licensed weren’t even in Australia - they were in Texas during a six-month uni exchange. “It instantly opened doors,” he says. “Skydiving is the ultimate travel hack - you rock up anywhere in the world with your rig and licence, and you’re instantly part of a global family.”
That family has since taken him to some ridiculous places: earlier this year, Sam jumped over Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. “Seeing a country from the sky… that’s a perspective you can’t buy any other way.”

Home Base: Skyone Elderslie
When he’s not travelling, Sam’s home drop zone is Skyone Elderslie. Located in the heart of the Hunter Valley, it’s surrounded by beautiful wineries and green rolling hills, offering an epic backdrop for every jump.
"It’s a family," he says. "They throw legendary events like Black Death, and they invest in every single person - whether it’s your first jump or your thousandth.”

THE GREAT EQUALISER
One of Sam’s favourite things about the sport is its levelling effect “You’ve got surgeons jumping next to students, CEOs next to backpackers. Once you’re geared up, no one cares what you do - just whether you can nail a formation in freefall.”
And his first completely solo jump? “Terrifying. The scariest thing I’d ever done. But the high you get afterwards - that’s the hook. Even better when you’re buzzing alongside your mates.”

THE MONEY QUESTION
Skydiving isn’t cheap, and someone once asked a veteran at the DZ how much money they could’ve saved if they hadn’t spent it on the sport. The reply stuck with Sam:
“Yeah… but then what would I spend it on?”
“To me, that’s deep,” Sam says. “Life’s about living it. Money is just a tool to make that happen. You can have a nice car, or you can have a lifetime of insane memories. I know which one I’m choosing.”

more than a sport
For Sam, skydiving isn’t just a hobby - it’s a philosophy. He’s working on a video about the silence in extreme sports.
“Whether you’re about to bomb a double-black snowboard run, cliff jump 15 metres into the ocean, or step out of a plane - you get this beautiful silence. No worries about bills, work, or gossip. Just total presence. That’s why I love it.”

community beyond the clouds
Sam’s also big on making adventure accessible. In Newcastle, he and his girlfriend run @moistmondays - a weekly sunrise ocean swim followed by coffee.
“It’s not a run club, you don’t need gear - just the willingness to get cold and watch the sunrise. If you love good people, pushing yourself a little, and forming real deep connections over a coffee, then come meet the crew. Everyone is always welcome!”
Final word
“If you’re even thinking about skydiving - do it. It’s the best decision you’ll ever make. It’s pure freedom, and the people you’ll meet will change your life.”

Some legends live for the feeling of falling. Others live to help people bounce back.
It's time to trade a parachute for a skateboard and hit the coast with a former pro who’s all about putting community first.
STOKE
kick,
push,
On the Gold Coast, the stoke is strong. It’s not just about surf breaks and sunburn - it’s about the grind, the concrete, and the wheels that never stop turning. And right at the core of this coastal skate scene is Rock N Slide Skateboarding, a grassroots movement led by former pro skater Jesse Noonan that’s less about showing off and more about showing up - for yourself, your crew, and your community.

FROM GROM TO PRO
Jesse’s story starts like most great skate stories do - with a beat-up old board and a refusal to get off it. A hand-me-down from a mate’s garage turned into a full-blown obsession. No YouTube, no playbook, just trial, error, and a whole lot of grit.
“The second I stood on that board, I knew. I wanted to master it, live it, breathe it - go all in.”
And he did. Jesse went from the local parks to the pro circuit, landing brand deals with heavyweights like Vans, Santa Cruz, and Volcom. But the bigger the air, the clearer his vision became: skating wasn’t just about landing tricks - it was about lifting others up.
“One day I was skating for myself, and the next I was teaching and building a crew. It all felt natural, and I loved it that way.”
Skating with Soul:
What Rock N Slide Is All About
Rock N Slide isn’t some elite skate school. It’s not about turning kids into pros (though that happens too). It’s about confidence, connection, and celebrating every little win on four wheels. Jesse’s created a space where falling is part of the process, where cheering is louder than judging, and where good vibes rule the day.
“We’re all about looking out for each other, celebrating wins big and small, and keeping the stoke alive,” Jesse says.
Rolling for Everyone: From Toddlers to Trailblazers
Whether you’re 3 or 63, Jesse’s crew has a session for you. The Micro Groms program gives tiny shredders their first push, while more advanced riders get dialled in with camps, clinics, and structured training. But the real standout is Skate Advantage, a program designed for skaters with disabilities that breaks down barriers and builds pure joy.
“With Skate Advantage, we’ve seen people discover a sense of belonging, confidence, and identity. Once you’re a skater, you’re a skater for life and that’s powerful.”

Beyond the Board: The Culture Behind the Crew
The magic of Rock N Slide isn’t just Jesse, it’s the team around him. A tight-knit crew of skaters, coaches, and legends who share one goal: help others level up, on the board and in life. They’re not just teaching how to drop in; they’re teaching how to bounce back.
“We’re teaching people to be resilient, to keep pushing forward, and to be part of something bigger.”

Big Plans, Bigger Impact
Jesse’s nowhere near done. He’s got big plans brewing - more events, more inclusive programs, more places to skate. But he’s doing it his way: laid-back, tuned in, and totally true to the scene.
“I’m going to keep doing what I love - skating, playing my flute, and keeping the vibe alive. I like letting the surprises find me.”
jesse's advice for the next gen
“Nail your basics. That’s your foundation. Then chase the tricks that light you up. When you’re stoked on what you’re learning, the rest takes care of itself.”
want to join the crew?
You’ll find Rock N Slide rolling across the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, from public parks to indoor spots. Book a session, catch a lesson, or just come down and soak up the vibes. You can also follow @skateadvantage for updates on adaptive skate programs and upcoming events.

Some legends are all about the stoke of the crew.
Others are fuelled by the fire to get back on top. It's time to hit the water with a wakeboarder who took a brutal injury and turned it into the warm-up for his best ride yet.

Wake, Break, Comeback
Joe Battleday’s Rise Back to the Top
Two years on the sidelines would crush most riders. For Joe Battleday, it was just the warm-up. After a brutal ankle injury, the Sunshine Coast local rebuilt himself from the ground up - physically, mentally, and on the water. Now, he’s stacking podiums and proving that patience, persistence, and a whole lot of cable park laps can turn a setback into a launchpad.
This isn’t just another comeback story - it’s a masterclass in how to ride the highs and lows, literally.

.png)
from sidelines to start gates
When a 2020 ankle injury took Joe out of the game, it was more than a few months off. What was meant to be a simple recovery turned into a frustrating 18-month battle. It took eight months for doctors to discover the true culprit - an unstable accessory bone called the OS Trigonum - and another eight months of grueling rehab after surgery. Instead of letting the setback kill his momentum, he turned the Bli Bli cable park into his second home, using every hour to fine-tune his skills.
“The injury taught me patience,” Joe says. “You’ve got to trust the process because even when you’re not on the board, you’re still building towards it.”
podiums & payoffs
When Joe finally clipped back into his bindings, he made it count. His first event back was the Langenfeld Open, where he immediately landed a third-place finish. That same season, he went on to win two more events, finishing fourth in the world rankings. The following year was just as dominant, as he secured a second-place finish at the Wake Park Worlds on the Gold Coast, riding in front of friends and family. A week later, he took first place at the LF Park Pro at Wake Island.
“These results were special,” Joe says, “not just for the trophies, but for the reminder that all the work was worth it.”

BEYOND THE WAKE
Joe’s not just chasing medals - he’s giving back to the scene that’s fueled his career. Whether it’s coaching sessions, community events, or hanging at Melbourne Cable Park swapping tips with groms, he’s invested in growing the sport from the grassroots up.
WHAT'S NEXT?
More comps, more travel, more progression. Joe’s not slowing down - if anything, the injury years have made him hungrier.
Joe’s Message to Riders Coming Back from Injury:
“Take it slow, master your basics, and chase the tricks that make you stoked. Progress comes when you’re having fun.”

The glory is a quick flash, but the real test is a different story.
This is a deep dive into the mindset of a climber who didn't just conquer mountains, he conquered his own limits.
locked in:

Andrew Lock’s Ascent to the Top
You’ve got to be built differently to tackle the world’s highest mountains. Andrew Lock isn’t just any climber - he’s the first Aussie to summit all 14 of the world’s 8000m peaks. But the thing is, Andrew doesn’t just climb because it’s there; he climbs because, at the edge of human endurance, there’s something you can’t get from a regular 9-to-5. There’s a rawness, a primal drive that hooks you, and Andrew’s lived it for 16 years. He didn’t just climb the mountains - he conquered them, and now he’s passing on the grit and wisdom he learned along the way.

The First Step: From Scout to Summit
It wasn’t fancy gear or mountaineering camps that got Andrew started - it was a pub in Wagga Wagga. “A slideshow on Everest came to town, and it changed my life. Twenty people showed up, and I was one of them.” That was the spark. He went from being a kid who loved the outdoors to someone who set his sights on summiting Mount Everest, no guides, no shortcuts, just raw determination.
"It was life transforming for me. I decided then and there to climb Mt Everest. In those days you couldn’t be guided and I’m not that type anyway, so I had to learn to be a high altitude mountaineer."

k2:
the true summit
When most people think mountaineering, Everest comes to mind. But for Andrew, it was K2 that proved what he was made of. The second-highest mountain in the world, and the one they call the hardest to climb, was his proving ground.
"I was lucky to climb with a Russian legend called Anatoli Bukreev. He was as tough as they come and I learned a lot from him. He pushed us to climb through the worst conditions to get high on the mountain for when the good weather came."
The climb wasn’t easy - Andrew faced gale-force winds and constant avalanches - but he pushed through, all while the world around him crumbled. He made the summit, proving that grit overcomes the toughest odds.

Annapurna: Where Legends Are Made
Annapurna - one of the most dangerous climbs in the world. On his first attempt, Andrew’s team lost a member to an avalanche, and three others were injured. But the next year, Andrew came back to face it again.
“When I went to climb it there’d already been 60 deaths for the 120 summits achieved. On my first attempt, 1 of our team was killed and 3 badly injured in an avalanche.”
It wasn’t just the summit that was a win, it was the raw survival instincts that kicked in and helped him and his team escape alive “Getting off the mountain was like some kind of reprieve. The summit faded behind the fact that we’d survived.”

the everest rescue: no questions asked
In 2004, Andrew’s Everest expedition took a wild turn when he helped rescue several climbers. One had run out of oxygen, another collapsed from hypoxia, and a third was simply too far gone to make it without assistance.
“Nothing drove the decision to help. We were in a position to assist, so we did."
the everest grind: where resilience meets reality
At 8000m, nothing is easy. The air is thinner, the days drag on, and the body slowly unravels. “You wake up feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck, but you push on because you’re driven by a purpose. The physical exhaustion, the headaches, the nausea - it’s a grind. It’s not for the faint of heart, and you better be prepared for some serious suffering.”
Andrew’s advice to those looking to climb? “Choose a goal that has genuine meaning for you. And then chase it with all your heart.

Mindset & Risk:
managing the unimaginable
Andrew Lock learned early in his career that mountaineering isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about mindset, risk management, and resilience.
"I was lucky to survive my first couple of 8000-metre expeditions as I really didn’t have sufficient experience, but I soon learned the three key elements required to succeed on those peaks"
The absolute belief in a goal that is genuinely meaningful. Andrew explains that those who fail often lack a deep connection to the goal they’re chasing. “The first people to give up are those who’ve set some worthless self-aggrandising target that soon loses its attractiveness when the going gets tough,” he says. His advice? You need something worth fighting for.

Risk Management - Not risk aversion, but the ability to take calculated risks to overcome the dangers of high-altitude climbing, avalanches, serac collapses, crevasses, freezing cold, and massive falls.
“One has to take risks to overcome the objective dangers. But they can be managed through skills development, adaptability, and constant reassessment as the risks themselves evolve."
Resilience – Perseverance, grit, adaptability, and optimism. “With a mindset that embraced those three key elements, I found that I could cope with any level of discomfort, I could park my fear when needed, I could genuinely enjoy the journey, and I could continually push my boundaries beyond what I thought I was capable of.”
These three pillars form the backbone of Andrew’s mountaineering philosophy, enabling him to face and overcome challenges that would deter most. For Andrew, it’s not just about reaching the summit - it’s about how you manage yourself, adapt, and grow through the process.
Retirement & Speaking: Lessons from the Top
After summiting the world’s highest peaks, Andrew retired from high-altitude climbing in 2012. “There are only 14 of these mountains. I’ve climbed them all. There comes a point when you know it’s time to stop. I retired not because I didn’t want to climb anymore, but because the risks were too great.”
Now, he’s sharing his experiences as a motivational speaker, inspiring audiences to embrace challenges, set big goals, and live a life full of adventure. “My stories from the mountains aren’t just about climbing - they’re about leadership, goal setting, resilience, and taking risks. These are lessons you can use in life, not just on a mountain.”
A Word for the Next Generation:
“Choose a goal that has genuine meaning for you. And then chase it with all your heart. “
.jpg)
Andrew Lock isn’t just a mountaineer, he’s a symbol of resilience, purpose, and the drive to push the limits of what’s possible. His story isn’t about climbing mountains; it’s about climbing through life with courage, grit, and a mindset that refuses to quit. As Andrew continues to inspire the next generation, his legacy is clear: when you’re locked in, there’s nothing that can stop you.
Andrew’s journey from the peaks of Everest to sharing his wisdom continues through his motivational speaking and ambassador work. You can catch him at conferences, leadership seminars, and adventure events, where he offers inspiring lessons on resilience, goal-setting, and overcoming challenges.

HIKE IT OUT
Coastrek x Beyond Blue Take on Australia’s Most Epic Coastlines
Sometimes the best therapy comes with salt on your skin, wind in your hair, and a trail stretching out ahead of you. That’s exactly the spirit behind Coastrek’s 2026 series - an all-out hiking challenge that pairs breathtaking coastlines with a powerful mission: raising funds for Beyond Blue to support mental health across Australia.
This isn’t just a walk in the park (literally). Over 12 weeks of training, teams of trekkers get ready to take on 20km, 30km, or 50km challenges in five of the country’s most jaw-dropping locations: Sydney, Mornington Peninsula, Sunshine Coast, Fleurieu Peninsula, and the Margaret River region.
The goal? Move your body, connect with your mates, soak up nature - and help fund the Beyond Blue 24/7 Support Service, which has more than 750 people reaching out for help every single day.
“There are strong synergies between Coastrek and Beyond Blue with both organisations recognising the benefits that physical fitness, social connections and being in nature have on mental health. Taking on a challenge like Coastrek establishes a positive connection with fitness and a healthy routine that benefits trekkers way beyond the finish line,” says Coastrek Founder, Di Westaway OAM.

why this trek matters
Right now, around 5 million Australians are living with anxiety or depression. Nearly half of us will face a mental health condition at some point in our lives. Beyond Blue is working to change that - focusing on prevention, early intervention, and making sure support is always within reach.
For Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman, Coastrek is more than just an event: “I always come away from Coastrek events with a full heart - great conversations with trekkers and volunteers, and the powerful combination of being out in nature and connecting with others makes the experience so rewarding.”
a movement built for connection
While Coastrek is open to everyone, it’s been especially embraced by women - 1 in 3 women will experience anxietyin their lifetime, and 1 in 5 will experience depression. Over 60% of Beyond Blue’s annual contacts are from women seeking help for themselves or someone they love.
Coastrek creates space for those conversations. Whether you’re walking two-by-two or in a group of ten, it’s about showing up for yourself and for each other.

Some legends find their purpose at the top of a mountain. Others, a little closer to the ground.
A look at the obsession of a climber, and the "second-hand stoke" of a filmmaker who lives for the creative grind.

Second Hand Stoke
Capturing epic with Arny Cain
He’s filmed the first FMX triple backflip, Ryan Williams’ hardest trick ever landed, and the world’s youngest BMX triple flip and he’s done it all without leaving the ground. For Arny Cain, the rush isn’t in throwing the trick, it’s in capturing it so the rest of us can feel that same heart-in-your-throat high.

%20(1).png)
From Drift Carts to the Big Leagues
Arny Cain’s story started with a Sony Hi-8 camcorder and a family road trip. At 12, he stole it from the family cupboard and pointed it at his mates bombing hills on dodgy homemade drift carts. No plan, no training - just the thrill of locking something ridiculous into tape forever.
That raw chaos turned into something bigger. Soon he was filming skateparks, parties, and nightclubs, discovering the camera wasn’t just a tool, it was a backstage pass.

Say Yes, Figure It Out Later
His motto? Be there. Be ready. Say yes. That attitude pushed him into the world of elite action sports. It’s how he found himself on the landing of the Nitro World Games mega ramp, thousands watching, mates sending it off the edge, and him catching every second.
Coastal Roots, Adrenaline DNA
After moving from Darwin to Perth, then Perth to the Sunshine Coast, Arny found himself surrounded by surf, skate, and a community built on speed, style, and send. It became the perfect backdrop to hone his storytelling, capturing energy so raw you can almost smell the petrol and feel the spray.

#SECOND HAND STOKE
It’s his philosophy and his fuel.
“Second Hand Stoke is a play on ‘second hand smoke’ but instead of filling your lungs, it fills your soul. It’s the high you get from being there when someone nails something epic, and knowing you helped capture it so the world can feel it too.”

THE SHOTS THAT MADE HISTORY

First FMX Triple Backflip A front-row lens on one of freestyle motocross’s biggest milestones.
-
Ryan Williams’ Hardest Trick Ever Landed on BMX Proof that pushing limits makes for the best stories.
-

What’s Next
Right now, he’s running Harry Bink’s channel as Bink builds his dream compound and fights to get back on top. He’s also documenting Blair Bretag’s mission to become an MMA world champion. The tricks might change, but the energy never does.
arny's advice for new creators
“Be of value to someone of value. Find the people doing things you admire, then figure out how you can help them tell their story better than anyone else.”
Whether you’re behind a lens, on the board, or holding the throttle, that’s the game plan turn up, bring something worth sharing, and the rest will follow.

NO PLAN. ALL PASSION.
Cass’ Unfiltered van Life
Let’s be honest, most people just talk about a life on the road. Cass actually did it. At 21, she packed up everything she owned, bought a van, and hit the highway solo with the kind of sheer audacity we can only dream of.
Fast forward two years, and her digital footprint has exploded. Under the handle @cassadvantures, she's built more than a following - she's built a movement. Her content is raw, real, and a whole lot of real insight into solo traveling as a young woman.

from suburbs to viral sensation
This whole thing wasn't even the plan. Cass started her Instagram account just to show friends and family what she was up to. It wasn't until her partner at the time kept pushing her to post vlogs on TikTok that her digital life exploded.
"I kept telling him no one would care what a 21-year-old was doing," she recalls. He persisted, and when she finally posted, it went nuts. Over a million views, and the rest is history.
Her story isn't about escaping; it's about choosing. And she chose to do it alone. Her reason was simple: she didn't have anyone to go with. But that decision was a power move that opened the door to a kind of freedom she’d never known.
The Real Life of a Roamer
This isn't a glossy travel show. It’s real life, and that includes the stress of van breakdowns, the leap into independence, and the challenge of solitude.
-
Leaving Home: Cass admits that growing up in Brisbane with a "very privileged upbringing," the initial leap into solo travel was a major challenge. "It was my first time away from home... going from 0 to 100 was a lot."
-
Embracing Solitude: While living alone can be lonely, she's learned to love it. She says she had to adapt and "fall in love with the silence and freedom of solo travel."
-
Van Breakdowns: This is the most brutal part. As Cass puts it, "When your van breaks down, it’s not just your ride - it’s your home, your transportation, and your livelihood." She’s faced flat batteries in the hills of New Zealand and been stranded in the middle of the bush with no reception.
-
The Ultimate Lesson: Through it all, she’s learned to "roll with the punches." She used to get stressed when plans went sideways, but now she laughs it off, adapts, and enjoys the ride even when things don't go perfectly.

why you should go for it:
Cass’ message to anyone dreaming of a different life is clear and simple: don't wait. "If you wait around for the perfect time or the perfect people, you’re never gonna go." Her journey proves you can build the kind of resilience and confidence that only comes from living entirely on your own terms.
HERE'S THE PLAYBOOK:

What’s Next?
Just Keep Roaming
Cass’ journey is still ongoing. As she’s wrapping up a 15-week Europe trip, she’s already heading to Canada for a new van life chapter starting on September 2nd. Her long-term goal? Italy - the one place she's always wanted to go. "Hopefully I can do Italy in a van in 2026."

Forget the dusty guidebooks. For anyone wanting to follow in her footsteps, here’s a look at the absolute must-see spots in Australia, straight from Cass's personal hitlist.
-
The Red Centre, NT. Cass’ number one. This isn't just a place; it's an experience. The spiritual presence of the land, its rich cultural significance, and the deep, peaceful feeling of being in the middle of the outback make it an empowering part of any journey. This is the place that proves the struggles and dedication of life on the road are all worth it.
-
Tasmania. While Australia doesn't have massive mountains, Cass is adamant that "Tassie has the best mountains in Australia." She recommends exploring the Tasman and Cradle Mountain National Parks for their epic overnight tracks and cool, unique rock formations. This is a place for serious hikers and lovers of rugged, untamed landscapes.
-
Karijini National Park, WA. It’s simple: "The best National Park in all of Australia is next." Cass loves it for its "sick landscapes, really super red rocks, swimming spots, gorges," and the fact that you can see dingoes everywhere. This is the place that’ll make you fall in love with the Aussie outback.
-
The Top End, NT. You can tell Cass loves being in the desert and around Indigenous culture. She says the Top End - with Litchfield, Kakadu, and Katherine -is "insane." It’s an unforgettable road trip filled with waterfalls and plenty of chances to see crocodiles.
-
Beaches: Esperance & Jervis Bay. This was a hard one, so Cass chose two. She’s convinced Esperance in Western Australia has "the bluest water," but she’s equally obsessed with the clear water and beautiful white sand of Jervis Bay in New South Wales. Both are a must-see for any beach lover.
-
The Flinders Ranges, SA. "So underrated," she says. The Flinders Ranges is the perfect spot for those who love the desert but want to go somewhere a little more off the beaten path. It’s ancient, rugged, and jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Cass’ must-see destinations

The freedom of solitude on the open road is one thing.
But there's a different kind of magic in sharing the journeythe breakdowns, the sunrises, and the ridiculously small living space. From a solo mission to a team effort, this is what van life looks like for two.
DRIVING WITH

SUNNie
Three and a half years ago, Mia and Brody swapped the grind for the open road, a dog, and a big dose of “let’s see what happens.” What was meant to be a quick lap of Australia turned into a one-way ticket to full-time van life - and they’re still out there, chasing sunsets and fixing the occasional flat.
Back in early 2021, overseas trips were off the table (cheers, COVID) and the pair were itching for something bigger than commutes and weekly meal prep. Enter Sunnie - a 2018 Ford Transit with nothing inside but potential. Armed with a $10K budget, Brody’s tradie skills, and Mia’s vision, they spent six months turning that empty shell into a tiny home on wheels: full kitchen, fixed bed, toilet, pull-out table, and an outdoor shower. Oh and a custom fit-out for Miley, the four-legged co-pilot who’s basically the boss.
the highs, the lows, the flat tyres
Life on the road isn’t just endless beach views and Instagram reels, it’s also corrugated roads that rattle your fillings and the occasional two-week breakdown wait. But for Mia and Brody, the trade-off is worth it: slow mornings with no agenda, front-row seats to Australia’s best sunrises, and the freedom to change plans on a whim.
The toughest bit? National Parks aren’t always dog-friendly. But with a little planning (and the occasional pet sitter), Miley’s been there for almost every adventure.

.png)

inside scoop: love, fur & zero personal space
Here’s the part Instagram doesn’t always show - living in a van with your partner and a dog is equal parts dream and chaos. Forget the “his side/her side” of the bed - Miley takes the middle. Showers are scheduled military-style if you want to avoid stepping on each other. Arguments? They happen… usually over where to park, which way the bed should face, or whether “we really need to stop for coffee again.”
But then there are the wins - like cooking breakfast barefoot on a beach, having a permanent travel buddy who knows your coffee order, and a dog that doubles as a heater on cold desert nights. Mia says it best: “You learn to talk it out, laugh it off, and remember you’re doing something most people only dream about.”
under the hood
(and the to-do list)
Three years of exploring, especially WA’s brutal tracks has left Sunnie with a few battle scars. Right now she’s in the shed for some TLC: fixing the slide-out drawers, tweaking the pull-out bed, and saying goodbye to white cupboards (turns out, not so dust-friendly).
Next up? A run to Far North Queensland before the heat really kicks in. After that - who knows? That’s the beauty of van life.
Follow their adventures at @driving.with.sunnie.

Rolling with your partner and a dog is one way to find your tribe.
But what if the tribe is already waiting for you, boards strapped to the roof and a full tank of gas? It's time to get on the bus.
roll out the east coast with

There’s travel, and then there’s travel with sand still between your toes and saltwater still in your hair.
The Australian Surf Bus is what happens when you throw an East Coast road trip, surf lessons, campfire swags, and a busload of new mates into the same salty mix.
This isn’t point A to point B. It’s point hell-yeah to point how-good-was-that. Every day’s a different coastline, a new break, and another reason to forget what day it is.

seb's big idea
Seb grew up surfing the Sunshine Coast, chasing comps, and later chasing stories as a journalist - using the job to fuel big trips through Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
The lightbulb moment hit in Nicaragua, swapping travel tales with other young entrepreneurs. Australia had some of the world’s best beginner surf spots, epic local coaches… and no way to connect them into one flowing, surf-soaked journey.
So Seb did what any wave-chaser would: bought a bus, loaded it with swags, and launched it with a big social media push. The response? Instant. The Surf Bus was booked out, full of travellers trading nightclub hangovers for sunrise sessions.

meet your new crew
They’re more than drivers and surf coaches - they’re hype crew, storytellers, and tide-watchers rolled into one. They’ll push you into your first wave, cheer your wipeouts, and swap stories over a beach bonfire like you’ve been mates for years.
Some chased pro surfing dreams, others bailed from 9–5s to chase swells full-time. What they’ve got in common is a mission: get you hooked on surfing and Australia’s coastline before the trip’s over.

A Day in the Life on the Bus
MORNING
Coffee, boards, coastal roads that make your camera cry happy tears.
MIDDAY
Lessons or free surf time at hand-picked breaks.
AFTERNOON
Chill on the sand, poke around sleepy surf towns, or spot dolphins offshore.
NIGHT
Swag camping under a billion stars, fire crackling, swapping travel tales.
By the time you crash, you’re sun-tired, salt-crusted, and grinning like a kid who just learned the word barrel.

Crescent Head – Turquoise bays and peeling point breaks.
-
Byron Bay – The postcard-famous vibe with waves for every level.

Secret Spots – The ones you don’t geotag - where you’ll share the line-up with more turtles than tourists.

From the rolling waves of the Sunshine Coast to its raw, granite heart.
The Surf Bus will get you stoked on the coastline, but for a different kind of rush, you have to head for the falls. This is where the locals earn their bragging rights.

Right, you’re officially inspired to do something that’ll make your heart try to punch its way out of your chest. but where to start?
Welcome to the menu of professionally guided chaos. A hand-picked list of experiences that are 100% guaranteed to deliver the goods. First on the docket: a head-to-head battle with Australia's most epic whitewater river.
TAMING THE TULLY
ritual of the rapids
Forget your theme park rides and your predictable getaways. In Tropical North Queensland, where the rainforest meets a river of pure adrenaline, there’s a better way to get your fix. It involves a raft, a paddle, and a Grade 4 torrent of whitewater that will make you feel ridiculously, uncomfortably alive.
This is the Tully River, and you’re here for one reason: to go head-to-head with Australia's best rafting river.. We’re talking about a full day of Grade 3 and 4 rapids, the most insane adventure you can have in the rainforest.
Ready to get soaked, humbled, and completely addicted to the rush?

What’s It Actually Like on the Water?
Picture this: you and a crew of mates (or strangers who will soon become mates) are sitting in a raft, surrounded by lush rainforest, with dramatic gorges towering over you. You're a two-hour drive from Cairns, and you’re fully immersed in a world of raw, natural beauty.
Then you hit the rapids. With a force that defies its crystal-clear appearance, the river slams into your raft. The guides yell instructions, the water sprays, and you’re thrown around like a rag doll in a washing machine. You're not just a passenger; you're a part of the chaos, paddling like hell and screaming with a mix of terror and pure joy.
Turns out, navigating grade 4 rapids with nothing but a rubber raft and some serious courage is a pretty good way to feel alive. And you’re in good hands. The guides are pros who know the river inside and out. They handle the chaos; you just have to handle your nerves.
-
The Experience: A full day on a world-class whitewater rafting river.
-
The Vibe: A perfect mix of adrenaline and breathtaking natural beauty.
-
The Souvenir: A soaked shirt, sore arms, and a story you’ll retell every time someone mentions “doing something epic on a holiday.
the guides that go beyond
The experience wouldn't be the same without the people who make it happen. The guides are a huge part of the fun, a perfect mix of humor and professionalism that keeps you smiling and feeling safe. Guides like Paul (or Pauly) and Eli are known for being fantastic - full of energy, clear instructions, and a genuine passion for what they do.
As one rafter put it, "Eli's calm and supportive guidance made me feel comfortable almost immediately. It was the perfect mix of adventure and stunning scenery." Another review raves about Paul, saying he made the trip "not only super fun but also felt incredibly safe and well-organized." It's clear that these guys go above and beyond to ensure everyone has a great time, no matter how nervous you are at first.

ready to take the plunge?
Look, you can go to Cairns and see the rainforest from a car. Or you can get in the water with an experienced crew and come out with a whole new appreciation for your place in nature. It’s a pure, uncut shot of adrenaline. A primal thrill that’s terrifying, humbling, and ridiculously fun all at once.

A story about getting thrashed by whitewater rapids is a solid 8/10 at the pub. Respectable.
But if you’re chasing a 10/10, the kind of story that makes everyone else’s holiday sound like a trip to the local library? You’re going to need a bigger fish.
Much, much bigger.

the
GREAT WHITE

first thing's first:
this isn't a spielberg movie
You need to get the Hollywood version out of your head right now. Great Whites aren’t mindless monsters. They’re intelligent, intensely curious, but also cautious. Some days they put on a masterclass, circling the cage with a swagger that’ll leave you breathless. Other days, they’re ghosts in the blue, making you wait, building the tension until that first, heart-stopping appearance.
That’s the beauty of it. It’s raw, unscripted, and completely on their terms. This is a real-deal wildlife encounter, not a performance. Patience is part of the game.

ready to commit?
You’ve got two main plays here.
-
The Main Event: One-Day Shark Cage Diving
This is the signature experience. A full day on the water, dedicated to finding the apex predator. It’s pure, uncut adrenaline and the reason you came all this way. -
The Ultimate Double-Header: The Best of Both Worlds
For those who want to max out their time in the water. This package gives you a day with the Great Whites, followed by a day swimming with the Australian Sea Lions - the ocean’s hyperactive, acrobatic puppies. One day of awe, one day of pure fun.

One trip is about the cold, patient, silent awe of the deep blue.
The other is about being lowered into the warm water of a cranky reptile's swimming pool. Time to go prehistoric.

A 5-METRE SALTWATER CROCOLDILE
you
VS
Forget your infinity pools and your swim-up bars. In Darwin, where the locals have a slightly different idea of a refreshing dip. It involves a giant, prehistoric reptile with a ridiculous amount of teeth and you, floating in a clear box like a human-sized snack.
This is Crocosaurus Cove, and you’re here for one reason: to stare a prehistoric giant in the face and live to tell the tale. We’re talking about the Cage of Death, the most insane 15 minutes you can have in the Northern Territory.
Ready to get ridiculously, uncomfortably close to a living dinosaur? Let’s go.

so what's it actually like in the cage?
Picture this: you and maybe a mate (if you can convince one to join you) climb into a transparent acrylic tube. Then, a crane slowly lowers you into the warm water of a crocodile enclosure. There are no illusions here. You are in its house, on its terms.
And then you see him. A massive, five-metre Saltie, a true king of the ancient world, gliding towards you with a cold, lazy confidence. The keepers dangle some food, and with a speed that defies its size, the croc launches itself, its jaws snapping shut with a sound that you don’t just hear - you feel it vibrate through the water and right into your chest.
Turns out, seeing a one-tonne predator from a few inches away, with nothing but some fancy plastic between you, is a pretty good way to feel alive.

This isn't some backyard operation. The Crocosaurus Cove crew are pros who know these animals inside and out. They handle the giants, you just have to handle your nerves.
The Experience: 15 minutes in the Cage of Death.
The Options: You can fly solo or grab a friend and do the tandem dive, because shared terror is the best kind of terror.
The View: You get a full 360-degree view of the crocs, both above and below the water.
The Souvenir: You’ll walk away with a story that will shut down every other travel tale for the rest of your life.
Is It Worth It? Hell Yes.
Look, you can go to Darwin and see a croc from the safety of a boat. Or you can get in the water with one and come out with a whole new appreciation for your place on the food chain. It’s a pure, uncut shot of adrenaline. A primal thrill that’s terrifying, humbling, and ridiculously fun all at once.

Chasing Sky-High Views with PHS Helicopters

Red Centre, Elevated:
There’s seeing Uluru… and then there’s seeing Uluru. Forget the dusty windscreen shots and squinting from a lookout - this is the big leagues. You, strapped into a helicopter, blades spinning overhead, the desert stretching to the horizon in fifty shades of ochre.
For over 30 years, the legends at Professional Helicopter Services (PHS) have been turning bucket lists into bragging rights. Their mission? Get you as close to the heart of the Red Centre as humanly (and rotor-bladely) possible, without even breaking a sweat.
Your 25-Minute Desert Power Play
From the moment you lift off, Uluru dominates the horizon like the world’s most dramatic movie set. The pilot swings you wide so every seat gets a ripper angle - no craning necks or dodgy over-the-shoulder shots here. Then it’s on to Kata Tjuta, those giant domes rising from the desert like ancient warriors, each one with a story carved deep in time.
It’s not just the views that get you. It’s the feeling. The kind of calm chaos where your heart’s racing but your brain’s trying to memorise every shade of red, gold, and purple flashing past the window.

from the cockpit
“We’ve flown this route thousands of times,” says one of the PHS pilots, “but the light, the clouds, the shadows, the sheer beauty, it’s never the same. My favourite part? That moment passengers go quiet when Uluru fills the windscreen. That’s awe right there, and we love to experience it with them"
The Word on the Ground (and in the Air)
Travellers call it “the best money you’ll spend in the Outback”. Others go bigger: “Hands down, the highlight of my trip to Australia.” A few even confess they booked it twice. We’re not here to tell you how to spend your holiday… but we’re also not here to stop you.

Go On, Treat Yourself
Skip the FOMO and book your spot now - future-you will thank you.

Let’s be real, Mother Nature doesn’t always play ball.
But a little rain (or a 40-degree day, or the official start of magpie swooping season) is no reason to sit on the couch. The real legends just take the adventure inside. Here’s your playbook for getting your heart rate up when the weather tries to shut you down.

YOUR HOTEL IS BORING
Let’s be honest, most city hotels are a carbon copy of the last one you stayed in. Same beige walls, same overpriced minibar, same generic map of tourist traps at the front desk. It’s a snooze-fest designed to keep you comfortable, not curious.
Turns out, one guy got so fed up with the predictability of it all that he decided to throw the entire hotel rulebook off a rooftop. Literally.
Meet HOTEL NO, the brainchild of James Fry, a man on a mission to create a place that doesn't just give you a keycard, but a genuine sense of discovery. As one recent guest put it, "Was a fantastic experience for our joint bday celebrations... To experience something unique was brilliant!"

THIS ISN'T YOUR TYPICAL HIGH-RISE STAY
We’re talking six gleaming, renovated 1970s Airstreams, craned onto a secret CBD rooftop. It’s a design-forward sleepover spot for anyone craving a city escape with a side of glorious chaos. No lobby, no concierge, no one to hold your hand. This is Melbourne in its purest form: if you love a bit of adventure, you’ll be right at home. If you want everything handed to you on a silver platter, you’d best stay elsewhere.
Getting in is half the fun. No one’s telling you about the secret entrance you’ve got to figure that out for yourself. It’s the first test in choosing your own adventure, which is the whole point.
Another guest highlighted, "Good fun place to stay in the city! ...accommodation is modern and clean, there’s a few drinks and snacks free of charge." Once you’re in, you’ll find your silver bullet is decked out with a plush queen bed, a ridiculously cool pink ensuite, and a free minibar that’s actually worth raiding. Plus, there’s an iPad loaded with Netflix for when you need to switch off from the city buzz below. This sounds pretty good to us.
HERE'S THE BREAKDOWN
Five of these chrome beauties are your perfect, self-contained urban nests. But if you're feeling a little extra, you'll want to book the "Airstream with Benefits." The main benefit? A private deck and your very own spa, overlooking the city skyline. It’s the ultimate power move.
This is more than just a place to crash. It’s an experience designed to push you out of your comfort zone and into the real Melbourne.
Don't just read about it.

A rooftop hotel proves your weekend escape doesn't have to be predictable.
But what about the adventure itself? Time to bust an even bigger myth: that you need a one-way ticket and a life to find it.

QUIT YOUR JOB TO TRAVEL?
NAH, JUST DO IT BETTER
Think you need to ditch the 9-to-5 and sell all your possessions to have a life packed with adventure? You’ve been misled. Meet Pete and Nic, the duo behind Part Time Globe Trotting and proof that you can have your career and climb epic mountains, too.
These two connected over a love of exploring about a decade ago, and they haven't stopped since. When they’re not hiking every single weekend with their dog, Rosco, they’re plotting their next overseas escape or Aussie road trip. It all started as a way to share a few photos with mates, but it quickly blew up into a full-blown community of like-minded adventurers. Now, they do it to inspire - and be inspired.
Turns out, you don't need a year off to find adventure. You just need a weekend and a good pair of boots. Pete and Nic are spilling the secrets to their favourite local escapes, proving the wildest places are often closer than you think.
